Growing up I saw an HBO special of a Chris Rock comedy show. Nope, I did not meet the age requirement at the time, but my comprehension skills made me laugh internally harder than anyone could ever imagine. This made me take a lot of time in thinking about the type of music I digest and how I consume it willingly and unwillingly. I have done activities with "high schoolers" that help them assess the music they are listening to and if they are aware of the messages being sent. I encourage mindful listening, even if that means you are irritated by some of the lyrics but enjoy the overall message and intent. I often ask them to listen to the song, read the lyrics alone, then read the lyrics while listening to the song and then watch a music video. What exactly are you paying attention to and what exactly would you as a person actually decline if you could understand the overall concept. Comprehension and understanding is important. I enjoy music and con understand intention of lyrics and a artist purpose for discussion even if the verbiage is hard to digest or not the language I would use to describe essentially the same intention or regards. There is truly a time and place for everything. Sometimes people in the spirit of participating in movements, social justice, or wanting "praise" cut themselves off from the ability to use their voices, gain support or mistake what is being supported or given. I will say that some people argue like "Toys for Tots" and protest people who purchase their own gifts or the ones who do not also attend "Toys for Tots" when they can afford to purchase their own gifts or decline celebrating the holiday in that fashion. Messages through music, television, sounds and advertisements are prevalent. Many of us are exposed to messages when no one is even signaling to speaking to us. Some people end up existing like they have had an entire life experience when all they have had is the bombardment of sounds and advertisements that show up all at once, many times without knowledge of each "individual" who is outputting this message or code. I am also accepting the fact that some people are unaware of the terminology and fight against the very thing they are advocating for, If you do not know what analysis, statistics, research and data are or what the process consist of you might fight away something valuable and replace it with something you would not even want to end up being involved in. The worst part is when there are also major supporters for what you put in place of the actual thing you were looking for or desired. The biggest dilemma is knowing all participants in the school system are exposed to the scientific method and by virtue are arguing with the embedded understanding that they can see an experiment, mess ups, redo's, data, results and a final conclusion and decision. Otherwise many people should alleviate themselves from much of what they participate in. I suggest a lyrical analysis and inspection of your life starting today!
